SHOP | SLO relaxed over a few cups of slow pour coffee with Denver-based set designer and home stager, Bret Alexandra. On the agenda: Her recent projects, collaboration with Guest House, and tips on how to add style to your space.
S|S: We adore your eye for design and personal style. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your method when it comes to designing?
Bret: Thank you so much! I am a Colorado native with a background in modeling and set design. After years of figuring out how to express my creativity, I started my own interior design business, The Fourth House. In designing the more you style with what makes you feel good rather than what looks good it turns out much better. I’m also a big fan of mixing old with new to keep spaces fresh and full of character.
S|S: We’ve noticed a big shift in co-working spaces around Denver. People seem to be spending more time out of the home versus inside. What is your advice when it comes to styling your workspace?
Bret: It's great that creative people and artists are coming together in these community spaces to create and grow local business. If you're a female entrepreneur in Denver and haven't checked out Charley Co. you should! When styling a workspace it’s important to add elements of comfort to stimulate the mind. A couch or comfy chair does the trick. It's also important to find ways to keep your creative ideas flowing. Try facing your desk toward a window, mood enhancing candles or live plants. The inspiration will come easily.
S|S: We like how you work with locally-based artists and businesses to source product. As a Denver-based company, supporting and buying local is something we can get behind. What are your top 3 must-have items for any space?
Bret: Keeping business in the Colorado community and supporting local makers is important to me. Being a native I personally want to help and see Denver grow.
If I can only pick 3 must haves right now they are:
S|S: Tell us more about your collaboration with the Colorado-based home staging company, Guest House.
Bret: Yes, I love the concept! The founder, Alex, came up with the idea that listed homes and the furniture down to the accessories are for sale. Products are sourced from local makers and businesses. Visit www.guesthouseshop.com to shop online and stay up to date with events here.
S|S: Last but not least, who are some of your favorite Instagram accounts we need to follow?
